whenoldspeakhadbeenonceandforallsuperseded,thelastlinkwiththepastwouldhavebeensevered。historyhadalreadybeenrewritten,butfragmentsoftheliteratureofthepastsurvivedhereandthere,imperfectlycensored,andsolongasoneretainedone’sknowledgeofoldspeakitwaspossibletoreadthem。inthefuturesuchfragments,eveniftheychancedtosurvive,wouldbeunintelligibleanduntranslatable。itwasimpossibletotranslateanypassageofoldspeakintonewspeakunlessiteitherreferredtosometechnicalprocessorsomeverysimpleeverydayaction,orwasalreadyorthodox(goodthinkfulwouldbethenewspeakexpression)intendency。inpracticethismeantthatnobookwrittenbeforeapproximately1960couldbetranslatedasawhole。pre-revolutionaryliteraturecouldonlybesubjectedtoideologicaltranslation—thatis,alterationinsenseaswellaslanguage。takeforexamplethewell-knownpassagefromthedeclarationofindependence:

weholdthesetruthstobeself-evident,thatallmenarecreatedequal,thattheyareendowedbytheircreatorwithcertaininalienablerights,thatamongthesearelife,liberty,andthepursuitofhappiness。thattosecuretheserights,governmentsareinstitutedamongmen,derivingtheirpowersfromtheconsentofthegoverned。thatwheneveranyformofgovernmentbecomesdestructiveofthoseends,itistherightofthepeopletoalteroraboli**,andtoinstitutenewgovernment。。。

itwouldhavebeenquiteimpossibletorenderthisintonewspeakwhilekeepingtothesenseoftheoriginal。thenearestonecouldcometodoingsowouldbetoswallowthewholepassageupinthesinglewordcrimethink。afulltranslationcouldonlybeanideologicaltranslation,wherebyjefferson’swordswouldbechangedintoapanegyriconabsolutegovernment。
